Heavy Duty Lark was so easy to train, he was a laid backhorse, easy-going and very confident. I needed to get him fit andstrong to carry his own %u201cnatural self-carriage,%u201d and he was a%u201cpleasure to ride!%u201d I then started him in Trail and driving as a 3-year-old, continuing with dressage principles basics and fundamentals to create an All-Around Horse. As a 4-year-old, I showed him in Hunter Under Saddle, although he was more of a Western type, but he was a beautifulmover, balanced and traveled with his ears forward. And thejudges loved him! I also did Hunter Hack with him, he loved tojump, like Rugged Lark! As a 5-year-old, the owners agreed to try for the SuperhorseAward at the AQHA World Show. He qualified in 10 events.Maybe a record at the time - Western Pleasure, Trail, WesternRiding, Pleasure Driving, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunter Hack,Working Hunter, Reining, Working Cow Horse, Halter Stallions. He was an amazing horse and loved the different events.Working Cow horse was his and my favorite. I had so much funlearning from other professionals about this, it was all worth it!We were so excited to have a horse to qualify easily in 10 events,that it overwhelmed smart decisions. I thought the horse was fitand prepared enough to do all the events. With the classes sobig, there were multiple go rounds, and as the days passed, theschooling and competing was too much - Heavy Duty becamebody sore. We tried acupuncture and massage as %u201cno drugs%u201dwere allowed, but he wasn%u2019t just right. So, we chose the fewevents that we knew were his best to compete in. Right then andthere, I learned I should have chosen his best four or five eventsfor the World Show at the beginning. Heavy Duty Lark had a glorious show record, including winning the 1998 Versatility Class Champion at the All AmericanQuarter Horse Congress. The owners decided it was time forhim to retire from competition and begin breeding. He did justthat, and his get lived on following the Rugged Lark All Aroundhorses in the AQHA as well as with Appaloosas and Paints withtalents not only for a professional, but for Amateurs and Youthsalike!Over the years, I have learned countless valuable lessons froma multitude of horses. Heavy Duty Lark was one of them thatwill always stick with me.
