Friends converse, argue, and agree or not. Lawyers mediate. Nations employ diplomacy and when that fallsshort, war. In the process, the psychology, history andcharacter of those involved create havoc or harmony dependingon the strength of communication. This is as true for horses aspeople. Connection requires communication. Otherwise, it issterile, perhaps functional, but not beautiful. Communicationopens pathways, solves problems, keeps the peace. It is creative,not robotic. A horse who experiences true communication with his riderflows beneath invisible aids. He understands. Both horse andrider do. They are a unit, united in purpose, but more than that,in heart, body and mind. They are equal and happy. One is notthe subject of the other, not submissive or without his or her sayin every matter that concerns both. No horse made this clearer to me than my young, wild andfree-minded chestnut gelding, Flamenco. His first rider was acowboy who was equally wild and free-minded. The youngman did nothing in the saddle but keep his seat, however crazythe ride. Horse and rider were more airborne than not. Spectators watched in awe. In the weeks that followed, the two of themlived life at a gallop, which, needless to say, did nothing to fosterthe relaxation that training requires. When I began working with the colt, my goal was simply toease tensions. I had serious doubts that we could achieve this.Nothing about Flamenco was relaxed. Every muscle and nervewas taut, but I had nothing to lose. The horse was beautiful andathletic, and he liked me. It was worthwhile to give him all thetime he needed. Using my core strength to hold, then yield, plus weight aids,I achieved a measure of control in direction and gait.
