hyaluronan alone, small doses of atropinemay be included in the joint injection; themechanism of this action is not known, but it is anecdotally effective. Intravenoushyaluronan may be useful as a primary oradjunctive therapy in some horses.\Depending on the severity of theswelling and the treatment used, oneshould see improvement or resolution ofthe swelling within one to two weeks. If these treatments prove unsatisfactoryfor acquired bursae (carpal hygroma, capped elbow, capped hock), the swellingcan be drained with or without other treatments to induce fibrosis (scarring of thetissues) of the cavity, Dechant says. Shecautions that any time a bursa or synovialmembrane is drained or injected, there isa risk of infection. After any of these treatments, the horseis usually rested for a couple of days beforereturning to work. \be cold-hosed or iced and then wrappedafter training or work to reduce the recurrence of the swelling,\the problem does not resolve, then itshould be investigated further. When lameness is present, the cause ofthe lameness should be determined andtreated specifically. \include rest and/or controlled exercise formanagement of lameness problems, plusother treatment as indicated for the specific problem, such as shoeing changes,intra-articular medication, etc.,\Dechant. Underlying problems such as OCD orbone fragments require surgical removalof the chips or fragments. \ment may also be necessary for otherlameness problems,\cluding resection of the proliferative synovial pad in cases of villonodularsynovitis or synovectomy (removal of thesynovial membrane) in cases of proliferative synovitis where the synovial membrane is chronically thickened andinflamed.\She cautions against surgical removalof the fluid sac in cases of acquired bursae(carpal hygroma, capped elbow, cappedhock) for cosmetic reasons - somethingowners sometimes request. \not usually present with these particularproblems,\moval does not eliminate the cause of theblemish (i.e., kicking behavior, gait/occupational trauma) and attempts to heal the40 Arizona Horse Connection May, 2026continued on page 42TWIN ACRES EQUESTRIAN CAMP 602-309-89536407 E.
