utes exposure to fire - and once the roofstarts to collapse, you've got little or nochance of getting out.\Because many fires begin in haylofts,it's a good idea to apply a fire-retardantproduct on all the interior surfaces of theloft. It's also worth considering applyingit to a couple of wool or acrylic coolers, which could be stored for use in a fire.Thrown over a horse or a human, theycould protect against flying sparks andfalling debris until all were safely outside. When shopping for fire retardant paintsor coatings, be prepared to pay more thanyou would for an ordinary latex paint;these products often retail for $50 to $150per gallon (but bear in mind that theyoften cover adequately in one coat). Andconsider quality as well as price. Productsshould have the UCL (Underwriter's Laboratories) symbol on the label, and for usein barns, have a Class A rating - the highest ranking - required by building codesfor hospitals, elevators, nursing homes, storefronts in multilevel malls and otherhigh-traffic public areas. No product will make a barn totally fireproof - but using a fire retardant paint orcoating on your wood will slow down a fire'sprogress, reduce smoke development topractically zero and make it much easier forhumans and animals to escape. Rick Lindsay also points out the benefits of these products in terms of salvaging what's left of yourbuilding after the fire. \age to the structure both by the fire itself andby the fire-fighters. When flame-spread isdecreased, and the fire is not as hot, firefighters don't have to use nearly as muchwater.\A FEW OTHER TIPS%u2022 Keep dust and cobwebs to a minimum. %u2022 Discourage rodent populations thatmight chew your wiring by keeping yourgrain tightly stored in nibble-proof containers. %u2022 Situate your manure pile at least 20feet away from the barn to reduce thechance of combustion. %u2022 Keep aisles swept clean of hay andbedding, and clean up weeds, twigs orother trash that might accumulate aroundthe exterior of your barn. %u2022 Store flammable substances elsewhere. %u2022 Leave horses haltered in their stalls(with leather halters, or nylon ones with abreakaway feature), or keep their haltersand lead shanks hanging on stall doors sothey're immediately accessible in an emergency. %u2022 Consider running regular practice firedrills so that everyone has an action planshould a real fire occur. oTRITON BLACK GOLDMeinte 490 Sport Elite x Harmen 424 Sport16.2hh Friesian Stallion At Stud For 2026Negative for Dwarfism and HydrocephalusLimited Time Stud Fee: $600*Chute and Shipping Fees AdditionalFor breeding inquiries, please contact801.809.0518 or doublekbreeding.com56 Arizona Horse Connection March, 2026
