In this series, I would like to addresssome of the current trends seen inthe Western Dressage arena fromthe judge%u2019s point of view. One trend thatI see is new riders who dip their toes in thenew sport pool but never really jump in.Why is that so many try but don%u2019t reallystick with it?This is a very good question! Since mystart in Dressage and using these principles to train for all disciplines, I learnedthe simple word, %u201cDressage.%u201d It is a Frenchword that means, %u201ctraining.%u201d It was always so interesting for me to learn to workwith the horse naturally. We can do thisthrough the principles of dressage - first,being a balanced rider on the horse. Second is to communicate with this horsewith my body, seat, legs and hands. WhenI can control my horse with my aids, andof course, have a perfect balance on myhorse, then I can control his balance, speedand direction with ease. That is the ultimate goal. While the principles of dressage andwestern dressage are simple, executingthem, mastering them, is not. It takes dedication, practice, making and correctingmistakes and all the ups and downs in between. Sadly, there are several who beginthe journey and find it is too difficult training for them, they don%u2019t have enough timeto devote to it or they don%u2019t have the passion to become an efficient rider.Here are some tips that I hope will encourage those already in it to continue andothers to give it a try.%u2022 Go to a competition and see what itlooks like with riders at different levels.%u2022 Check out the outfits and tack ridersare using and learn about them. Mostwestern tack will cross over from otherevents/disciplines. Follow up with rulesonline.%u2022 Meet someone in your area that is involved and learn from them.%u2022 Meet an instructor or coach in yourarea; if you can%u2019t, you can search on the internet and align yourself with someonewho can guide you.%u2022 Video critiques are so popular today.Virtual training is very accessible.%u2022 Join USEF.
