sponded with utmost grace, concentration and control. European dressage was a far cry from American styles of saddle-seatand Western that I%u2019d seen and been practicing in Arizona. At the Spanish Riding School in Austria, it was standing roomonly to watch Lipizzaner stallions bearing tall, still uniformedriders dance to the music of a symphony orchestra in the resplendent Baroque riding hall. I was moved to tears. Here,Huizinga%u2019s words were living examples of play as %u201cmarked elements of beauty saturated with rhythm and harmony.%u201dIn France, the French Calvary at Samour gave an exhibitionof high school dressage almost equal to that of the Spanish Riding School. We were then served lunch as only the French can -assorted gourmet courses accompanied by the appropriate wine.In Germany, we watched Olympic gold medalist Joseph Neckermann compete at an international show. Afterward, he treatedus to an exhibition and light lunch at his elegant stable facility. His gentle manner and twinkling eyes expressed the happinesshe felt for horses and the art of riding. In Spain, a country of bravado, we watched Cavalry ridersslide down 150 or 160 feet of an eight percent grade that lookedvertical. With some trepidation, we half-expected to see themdrop to their deaths. Contrary to what one might expect, riderssat in a forward seat position, which allowed their horses freedom to use their hindquarters for this downhill %u201cgallop.%u201dBeauty, courage and nobility were to be seen throughout Europe. It was the result of centuries of dedication to architecture, art, and the breeding of fine horses. Art was an everyday affair, from dining to exquisite riding, especially in France. Their artswere to be savored and never rushed. Europe%u2019s Old-World sensibility and aesthetic would inspire the rest of my life. oShelley's recent books, A Riding Life %u2013 Memories, Dreams, Art and Love, also A Wordsmith %u2013 Intimate Glimpses into the Lifeand Work of Elleston Trevor, may be found on Amazon.
